Scooter or Wheelchair Rental: How to Choose

Questions to ask when choosing between a mobility scooter and a push wheelchair rental for a fair, an event or a Triangle visit. Not medical advice.

Updated

Choosing between a mobility scooter and a push wheelchair comes down to a few practical questions. Who is riding? How far will you go? Will someone be with you the whole time? This guide walks through those questions so you can call us ready to choose.

A note first. We rent equipment. We are not doctors or therapists, and this guide is not medical advice. If you have a health condition, or you are unsure what is safe for you, talk to your doctor or therapist before you rent.

What each one is

The two are close cousins. The U.S. Department of Justice, on ADA.gov, notes that people with mobility disabilities use many devices, including manual or power wheelchairs and electric scooters. The same page explains that covered businesses and governments must allow people who use wheelchairs and scooters into areas open to the public.

Here is how our rentals differ:

  • Mobility scooter. We rent 3-wheel and 4-wheel electric scooters. The rider sits, steers and drives. Baskets carry lightweight items.
  • Push wheelchair. A manual chair that a companion pushes. We offer multiple sizes. Leg lifts and foot rests may be available.

See photos of our own units on the mobility scooter and wheelchair pages.

Question 1: Can the rider steer and get on and off alone?

A scooter puts the rider in control. That suits someone who can sit upright, steer and get on and off without help.

This matters because our staff cannot lift or transfer guests. If the rider needs help to sit down or stand up, bring someone who can help. Your doctor or therapist can tell you what is safe.

Question 2: Will a companion be there the whole time?

A push wheelchair works best with a partner. If a family member or friend will stay close all day, they can push and the rider can rest.

If the rider wants to move about on their own, a scooter gives more independence. It also frees the companion's hands for kids, bags or food.

Question 3: How far will you go?

Think about the whole day, not just one stop.

  • Large grounds. Fairgrounds and market campuses mean long distances. Scooters help guests cover large fairgrounds and market campuses at their own pace.
  • Shorter outings. A family visit, a restaurant or a week of appointments may mean shorter distances with more getting in and out of cars. Tell us about your plans on the call.

At the NC State Fair, the Fair notes that its tram is not wheelchair accessible. Plan your route with that in mind. Our State Fair page shows where our tents were in 2026.

Question 4: Who is riding and what fits?

A few fit points to share when you call:

  • Weight. The maximum passenger weight on our scooters is 400 lbs.
  • Size. We offer wheelchairs in multiple sizes. Tell us who it is for and we talk through what is free on your dates.
  • Legs and feet. If the rider needs leg support, ask about leg lifts and foot rests.

Question 5: Who else will ride?

Only the person named on the rental may ride, one person at a time. No standing on the back. If two people need help getting around, rent two units.

Quick comparison

A scooter may suit you if:

  • The rider can sit upright, steer and get on and off alone.
  • You want the rider to move about on their own.
  • You expect long distances.

A push wheelchair may suit you if:

  • A companion will push the whole time.
  • The rider prefers not to drive.
  • You need a specific chair size or leg support.

Neither list is a medical rule. They are starting points for a conversation.

Safety basics for either choice

  • One person per scooter.
  • Keep away from stairs.
  • Keep valuables secured to yourself.
  • Tell staff about a hazard or a problem with the equipment.
  • At events, staff may decide a wheelchair does not safely meet a guest's needs.

Still unsure? Call us

Tell us about the outing and how far you expect to go. We go over the scooter and wheelchair options on the call. We tell you what is free on your dates and whether you can pick up or we deliver.

Common questions

Is a scooter or a wheelchair better for the NC State Fair?

It depends on the rider. A scooter suits someone who can steer and get on and off alone. A push wheelchair suits someone who will have a companion to push. Ask your doctor or therapist if you are unsure.

Can two people share one rental scooter?

No. Only the person named on the rental may ride, one person at a time.

Is there a weight limit on your scooters?

Yes. The maximum passenger weight on our scooters is 400 lbs.

Can your staff help someone onto the equipment?

No. Our staff cannot lift or transfer guests. Bring someone who can help if you need it.

Can you tell me which one I need?

We can explain the equipment and what we have free on your dates. We cannot give medical advice. Your doctor or therapist is the right person for that.
